How an edge grain surface is made
Boards are typically assembled from prepared strips with their grain running along the surface. The edges must fit well before glue-up; the assembled panel is then flattened, shaped and sanded.
Strip width, grain selection and the mix of colors all affect the appearance. Natural grain can be expressive without needing an elaborate pattern.
Size is a practical decision
Measure your normal preparation area and sink. Leave enough room to wash and dry the board safely. If it will be stored upright or in a cabinet, check that space too.
Thickness, overall dimensions and any handles or grooves should be discussed together. These details change the weight and usable cutting area. No single size is right for every kitchen.
A useful comparison with end grain
Edge grain generally needs fewer assembly stages than an equivalent end grain pattern, but the final quote still depends on the lumber, dimensions and design. Ask for a quote instead of assuming a fixed price difference.
Both constructions need careful washing and drying. Choose the look and practical features you prefer, then establish a care routine that keeps the wood away from prolonged moisture.
