Wine Cabinet Safety Door Finished!

Finally, the Wine Cabinet Safety Door is finished!!!

It’s taken 3 months, 14 mortise and tenons (the 13th and 14th were because I lost one of the arms), 9 glue-ups, many splinters and a little lost blood…

I took the last two clamps off last night. I expected to be doing that 4 days ago, but I keep forgetting that it takes 48 hours for the glue to dry when using this specie of wood. I’ve learned a lot, but still haven’t mastered anything.

I’ve included a couple of images, but please don’t look too closely at the joinery. There are many corners out of square, mismatched tenon shoulders, and other problems.

The most obvious problem in the pictures is a lighter square patch on the upper ‘arm’. It’s from a 90 degree clamp I used during a glue-up. It uses sand paper to grip what it is holding. I didn’t think about that until it was too late. I’ll probably have to go over that with another coat of BLO or something.

I know the pictures are terrible, I was trying to take them in a dark room. I’ll get some more of them up here tomorrow.

The wood looks a little lighter in the pics than it does in ‘real life’. It actually blends nicely with the darker wine cabinet.

The finishing schedule was: 5 coats of Dark Walnut GF Water Based Stain, with progressive sandings in between (120, 180, 220, 320). Then 3 coats of BLO with 320 grit in between the first and second, then the second and third coats.

I went to very high grits to make the frame (and door) feel ’soft’. The whole reason for this project was to ensure my baby’s safety. And, this wood is/was very splintery. I didn’t want any chances of him getting stuck with a splinter.
